Welcome to the Home Sweet Home blog circle, where a group of talented photographers around the world share why their hometown/state is the most fantastic place to visit! Should you find yourself in Texas, feel free to follow along with this series to find some of the most amazing hidden gems in the Lone Star State. After reading this post, be sure to follow the blog circle around the world to Anna Francken’s blog in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Her photography is always stunning and full of delightful European details!

This month’s Home Sweet Home post is a little personal as I introduce the newest member of the Wollschlager family. Meet Maximus Aurelius, or Max for short. Max loves shoes, balls, playing tug of war, and will do almost anything for a treat. He is the reason my social media and blogging has been obsolete as of late. D and I found him while perusing our local shelter here in Abilene on our June wedding anniversary. I told D that we would not make it out of the shelter without bringing home a dog. I know myself and I just can’t say no! Max was the cutest fluffiest dog there and I still can’t get over how much he and Marlie {my childhood dog} look alike. Everything from their mannerisms to the way they sit and play. We actually had the chance to introduce the two dogs on Father’s Day weekend. Needless to say Max is the punk teenager and Marlie is the seasoned veteran.

It’s been serious work having a dog around the house. Max still has plenty of puppy in him so while he may be potty trained, we’re currently working on no jumping and no biting. I know this is weird to say, but I feel like a first time mom. It’s the only time I’ve ever been fully responsible for someone other than myself all day every day with no break. Sure I watched my brother as a kid and even spent a fair amount of time with Marlie… but when push came to shove, Mom and Dad always stepped in and took the bulk of the responsibility. I worry about Max all the time although it’s getting less and less the longer he’s with us. I feel like a mom with tourettes when I’m talking to people on the phone… they’ll hear “Oh hi, Shelby! Soooo good to hear from you! DON’T TOUCH THE SHOES!!!!!!! How have you been? I SAID NO SHOES!….” Thankfully most of my friends either have small children or dogs themselves and are incredibly understanding.

Here are some Abilene dog tips… We highly recommend Dr. Bloodgood as a veterinarian. His office the Mobile Veterinary Clinic is on 3401 S Treadway Blvd Abilene, TX 79602. Their office number is 3256984900. He and his staff are absolutely amazing with the animals. I couldn’t believe how gentle and kind they are! They know that these pets are “our babies” and the uphold the promise to take the best possible care of them at all times. If you like the dog park scene, there is a dog park near the Abilene zoo called “Camp Barkeley”. They have an area for large dogs {30lbs and over} and a smaller one for small dogs {30lbs and under}. It’s great for getting your dog socialized and used to being around other pets!

Mostly it has been a joyous adventure to have Max be a part of our family. With a little training, patience, and lots of love things will continue to get easier. Huge shout-out to the husband for all of his hard work and for putting up with my current bouts of dog mom insanity.

1 :: BIRTHDAY WEEK!!!!This coming Sunday I will turn 29! My my my how time flies… To celebrate D and I will be taking a trip to Prague later in October, which means this weekend will be all about relaxing. AND making Italian Cream Cupcakes!!! Which I will be giving away to everyone I know because D hates coconut and I don’t want to eat every single one all by myself {actually I really do but………}. It’s funny, if you had told me once upon a time 10 years ago {at 19!} that this is where I would be at 29, I would have laughed and called you a liar…. then blinked furiously at you with wide hopeful eyes and asked “Seriously??”. There is so much to be grateful for, and while the loss of my mother is still fresh on days like today, I am reminded that life is truly beautiful and it is up to you to make the most of it!

2 :: Packing Up – At the end of this week we will have around 60 days left in Germany. Um, WHAT?!?! Somehow time has whooshed by….. and I am trying to take it all in stride and NOT PANIC. Due to the packing and appointments that will shortly commence in a frenzy, I will probably be posting less, blogging less, and trying to soak up what remains of our life here in Europe. I will still be photographing everything in sight, it just won’t make it up on the web until after we get to Texas. Who knows, perhaps I will have more time than I expect. I simply don’t want all of you lovely fans out there to feel slighted, gypped, or puzzled at my more absent online presence. Wish me some seriously luck ya’ll, as I know that a huge part of me will forever reside in Germany no matter where we live.

3 :: Soup to warm your Soul – I have been pinning fall flavored soups like crazy on Pinterest! It’s a serendipitous thing, but I figured what better than to share them with you so you can warm your bellies with these savory recipes. I’m huge on food that feeds your soul and there is something about fall flavors that speak to my heart in soft comfortable pear shaped tones. 6 :: Last Photography Session in Germany – I can hardly believe that I had my last photo session here in Germany this past weekend! It was extra special because I have worked with the Barron Family several times for both design work and photography. I was overjoyed with the idea that they wanted to wear traditional lederhosen and dirndls!! How fitting for my last shoot in Deutschland! We had such a blast and I can hardly wait to finish editing their session! Look for their sneak peek on the blog soon!

November 19, 2013

Sometimes life has a way of reminding you that the world is a very small place indeed. When D was deployed in Spain, he attended a bible study run by Chaplain Foust. Low and behold, the Chaplain’s family was actually stationed at Ramstein while the Chaplain himself was deployed to Spain just like D. After both men had returned safely home I was contacted by the Chaplain’s lovely wife Michelle to take fall photos of their family.

The day of their session we trooped out past Hohenecken to a camp ground near the lake. The foliage was at it’s peak here and we could not have asked for more beautiful weather for their session. I had such a fun time with their son Caleb. He is ridiculously photogenic and kind-hearted. He only laughed a little when I told him to pretend to throw the foodball to his running backs and politely corrected me “You mean wide receiver’s?”. Photographing Caleb and Scott throwing the football was one of my favorite moments. There is something so heartwarming about the bond between father and son. Michelle picked the best outfits for their photos that day, the navy’s in sharp contrast with the burnt orange foliage.

Scott, Michelle, & Caleb, you guys were SO much fun to work with. Thanks for humoring me as I posed you and for your good nature at the German commentary going on around us. I am so thankful that the Lord brought you and my husband together so that we had an opportunity to work with one another. I hope you enjoy your sneak peek and I am seriously psyched to show you the rest of the photographs from you session!

I want to thank the Foust family again for being such wonderful clients. You are such a beautiful loving family that it makes it easy to capture the closeness between you all. I wish you a wonderful holiday season this year!

All my life I have wondered what it would be like to have a sister. My own mother was blessed with four sisters and I have seen their relationships grow with time. I cannot even begin to tell you how much fun it was to have a session based on sisterly love. The mother of this family has developed a special tradition of photographing her daughters every year in the fall. Their home is full of so many wonderful photographs by such talented photographers I was honored to be chosen this year.

These two sisters are super close and have fun interests such as ballet, Nancy Drew, and piano. The girls were great to work with one on one and together as their inner beauty truly shines. It’s no secret that these girls are going to grow up to be stunning young women. The session took place in Martinshöhe, where there are breathtaking views and vistas that are the heart and soul of Germany in our area. I was beyond thrilled with the girls outfit choices as the magentas popped against the lazy fall foliage and the fields of German technicolor green.

M, I want to thank you so much for allowing me to experience your families joy. Your girls are delightful and I hope you enjoy your sneak peek. May they continue to grow in grace and beauty.

M, thanks again for such a marvelous opportunity to photograph your beautiful family. I truly enjoyed a chance to work with you and your girls. I can hardly wait to show you the rest of the photos from your session. I wish you guys all the best throughout the coming holiday season! SIG

1 :: Gray Days Be-Gone – Well the weather has officially switched. The sunshine is hibernating for the season and has been replaced with gray skies, high winds, and rain. Ugh. While this helps with my editing environment, it has a tendency to make me hole up in my Rapunzel tower. You know what this means? Tis the season to visit friends. I vow to get out once a week to spread some sunshine to those I know here. Yesterday we had the excitement of going to my nephew’s 2 year old birthday party at Kinder Spiel & Spass Fabrik in Kaiserslautern. It is the largest indoor/outdoor play park for kids within a 100 km radius. This place puts any play park in the states to shame. I definitely wish I was 7 years old again. The most hilarious part was upon entering the facility, the owner asked us where our children were. We had to explain that we didn’t have any. This got us a very stern look from the owner and I wondered if we were even allowed in without kids. If you have small children and haven’t gone to this playground, you need to go immediately! Ever the German venue, you can purchase a beer and indulge while watching your kids from afar. So if you want your kids to go to bed early, let them get their energy out at Kinder Speil.

2 :: Awe-inspiring Kindness – So this past week for Halloween, the KMC vendors hosted a giveaway. What could you win from Kirsten Ashley Photograph? Why a free mini-session and $10 print credit! A huge congratulations goes to out to Nikki Hinojosa for winning the giveaway! I expected to contact her and set up her Meet & Greet like I usually would…. imagine my surprise when she informs me that due to her husband being deployed she asked if she could gift her free session to a friend! I was floored. Nikki, you have such big heart full of selfless love. I feel like there are so few people in the world today who would do what you have done. It’s these acts of random kindness that restore my faith in people today. Doesn’t it make you {yes you reading this right now!} want to go out there and do something nice for a random stranger to pay it forward? Because that’s definitely how I feel.

3 :: Comfort Food = Happy Tummy – It’s that time of year again folks. Thanksgiving is creeping up slowly which means I’m stockpiling canned french green beans, cream of mushroom soup and dried cranberries. That being said I indulged in comfort foods this week. Click on a photo to take you to the recipe and be sure to follow my Yummay! board on Pinterest. 1) Coconut Chicken Curry Stew 2) Bourbon Sweet Potato Bisque with Brown Butter Cinnamon Sugar Croutons 3) Smoky Bacon & Corn Chowder 4) “Grown-Up’s” Mac n’ Cheese with Three Cheeses and Crispy Prosciutto 5) Chewy Oatmeal Coconut Brown Sugar Cookies

4 :: Warm as Toast – There is this incredible dichotomy in my life in regards to shoes. Most of you are aware that I’m a barefoot girl through and through. This begs the question “Then how is it that you are so obsessed with shoes?”. To me shoes are a visual art that you can wear. Plain and simple. And let me tell you there are some pretty fantastic artists out there. This time of year, however, brings about a shoe practicality that I cannot ignore {especially living in Germany}. Shoes keep my feet warm. I am famous for my popsicle toes here in this house and D goes to great lengths to keep my feet warm. I thought it’d be fun to give a shout out to the best houseshoes this week. Germans LOVE house shoes. They are even required for your child when they start kindergarten here. They wear slippers inside and regular shoes outside. Genius! So here are my picks for this week. 5 :: The Schneider Family Mini – Here is a one shot sneak peek of the Schneider Mini Session from last week! I adore these kids so much. It is amazing to see how much they’ve grown. The dino park was such a beautiful setting for this session! Thanks Russ & Michelle for letting me share these special moments.

Thanks for coming back this week! It’s my hope that MIAM brightens the beginning of your week so you can power through to the end!

1 :: Frankenstein’s Castle – I went with D and some folks from his office to the Frankenstein castle {Burg Frankenstein} about 5 km south of Darmstadt, Germany. The whole drive there I kept thinking ‘No, it’s pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”.’ {props to those of you who get it.} Built around 1250, the castle is now mostly a ruin save the still standing tower. At Halloween the Germans create a haunted house type festival at the castle grounds. For those of you who used to go with me at Texas Tech to the haunted houses in Lubbock, you know my easily startled nature is quite fun to watch. This was the first time I’d ever been to a haunted house with D, and he thought it was hilarious. The walk through was pretty spooky with some intense costumes. I’m used to a no touching policy at haunted houses… apparently in Europe the same rules don’t apply. I saw them take a girl, put her in a box, and slam the lid shut. She was not a willing participant. It was enough to make me cling to D for dear life. I was rewarded with cotton candy {Zuckerwatt en Deutsche} after our walk-through was done and we even did some swing dancing to the spooky version of “Hit the Road Jack” shocking all his co-workers. All in all, a great time and I recommend this adventure to anyone in the area!

2 :: What can you do with Pumpkin? – Every year I try to do different things with pumpkin, mostly because I end up hoarding it by the can in our pantry in case the commissary ever runs low. I made the pumpkin pancakes yesterday for D & I for Sunday brunch. They turned out fantastic! This year is no exception. Here are my favorite Pinterest picks for pumpkin treats! Don’t forget to follow my “Yummay” board! 1) Roasted Pumpkin Seeds 2) Pumpkin Spice Dutch Baby Pancake 3) Boozy Pumpkin White Hot Chocolate 4) Whole Wheat Pumpkin Pancakes 5) Pumpkin Spice Macarons

3 :: Best costume shoes
– In honor of the spooky holiday this week I thought I’d pay tribute to some of the famous iconic shoes we know and love. So if you have the costume and not the shoes, fear not, I have managed to track down the best representations {in my humble opnion} to best suit these personas. Click on a shoe to take you to the store to purchase. 1) Winifred Sanderson – Elf 05 Costume Shoes – $30.00 2) Dorothy Gale – High Heel Shoes Red Sequin – $43.42 3) Cinderella – Marc Jacobs Transparent Pumps – $595.00 4) James Bond (Skyfall) – Church Philip Black Calf – £ 430.00 5) Michael Jackson – Logan WEEJUNS Black – $108.00 6) Jack Sparrow – Pirate Boots Chocolate Brown – $320.00

3 :: Fav Halloween Flicks – If there’s one thing I’m missing over here in Germany it’s ABC Family’s 13 days of Halloween. So I thought I’d share some of my favorite Halloween movies so you won’t forget to watch them! These take me back to when I was a kid…. My brother and I used to LOVE watching these films and getting into the holiday spirit. Click on a movie to take you to Some are even available on Instant Video!

4 :: Past Carvings – I grew up with pumpkin carving being a right of passage in the family. I remember being a little girl and going down to the farmers market with my mom and dad and showing Dad exactly which pumpkin was the best for carving. We would then take it home and ceremoniously spread newspaper all over the kitchen floor. Dad always carved the top for safety reasons of course and then it was completely up to me or my brother to pick which design we wanted. I’m not sure when it turned into an art for me, but all I know is these days the more complicated the design the better. I found that using an X-acto knife works much smoother if you’re carving tiny details such a tree bark and window panes. Here are some years past carvings for you to enjoy. I’d like to point out the progression in image quality as the years wore on… {My brother PT, carved the Charlie Brown pumpkin. ‘Cause that’s how he rolls. Love you baby brother!}

5 :: The Foust Family – Before the rain and wind swept through the Rhineland-Pfalz this weekend I managed to capture the Foust Family in the beautiful fall foliage. They are such an amazing family so full of love and joy. Check out this sneak peek with more to come soon!

Thanks for coming back this week! It’s my hope that MIAM brightens the beginning of your week so you can power through to the end!

1 :: It’s heeeeeeeeerrreeee!!! – My favorite season seems to have descended upon me over night! For those of you who don’t know, fall is my FAVORITE. The clothes, the colors, the crispness of the air…. everything wonderful happens during this season: football, apple picking, pumpkin spice latte’s, halloween, my birthday….. and the list goes on! Fall in Germany is particularly enticing as it opens the door for so many festivals and things to do. Plus, the weather is cooler here which means I can break out my boots that much earlier! Now that D is back home, it feels as though everything is back in place and setting itself up for a glorious fall season!

2 :: Knee High Boots – I think my heart skipped a beat. These beauties are prized and most beloved. A huge thanks to my sister Sarah Ndjerareou for the tip off to Stuart Weitzman’s collection this year. What’s not to love about the over-the-knee boot? They are stylish, beautiful, and from the knee down you’re super warm and comfy. Sounds like a win/win to me! You had better believe all of these are on my birthday wish list this year. 3 :: Autumn Eats – I can’t decide what I’m more excited about this week. The food or the shoes. Autumn for me means breaking out the comfort foods. Dishes to warm the soul. It’s the time of year where my kitchen starts to flex it’s biceps in prep for christmas baking. I just hope you have some cool weather to let these dishes work their magic in. 4 :: Tunes for Fall – Autumn leads me towards slow folksy acoustic songs. So tuck in, I’ll be on this kick for a while. I’m not really sure why, but the vintage girl in my heart jumps up and down ecstatic with joy upon hearing these artists. I’ve been editing some stellar sessions lately full of life and love and these tunes make me smile while perfecting family hugs or engagement kisses. August 24, 2013

I cannot tell you how much I enjoy photographing families. It’s one of my favorite parts of my job! I had the honor of photographing the Lormand family in early August. Nina had planned the photoshoot as a surprise for her husband Daniel for his birthday. I had such a wonderful time capturing their little family moments! There was so much love and so much energy! I adored their outfit choices in shades of blue, which complimented all of the bright colors of the gladiola fields in Weilerbach. Nina and Daniel were super fun to work with and their children, Sarah and Mason, are just too precious! We played with bubbles and the kids had a chance to swing in a blanket hammock. Nina, thank you SO much for working with me to make your session great. I hope you and Daniel will enjoy these photos for years and years to come! The images below are a sneak peek of the stellar fun we had the day of their session.

Daniel, Nina, Sarah & Mason, thank you SO much for letting me be a part of your loving family for an evening. My favorite photo by far is the one of the family in the sunflower rows. Sarah’s face is priceless! I wish you all the best and I hope that you enjoy your photos as much as I enjoyed taking them!

1 :: Seize the Day. No Seriously. – I cannot even begin to describe the excitement floating around my apartment lately. Do you ever just have a time in your life where things seem to magically fall into place? Where your creative juices are flowing like there’s no end in sight… the colors of life are more vivid… and even though your to-do list is  a mile long, you are psyched to accomplish each an every activity? Welcome to my week. I chose the “Carpe Diem” theme because when life hands you lemons, instead of making lemonade… kick it up a notch and make honey ginger tea-lemonade. Why settle for ordinary when you can reach for the impossible and do something you’ve only dreamed about.

2 :: Big Shoe News – Sarah Jessica Parker has announced that she will be launching her own shoe line come this January. The ultimate shoe connoisseur will now be designing beautiful heels. I feel like the world has been collectively waiting for this magical event for a very long time. According to Vogue UK SJP says ‘ “I’ve spent so much time in shoes now. I really feel like I have an advantage. I was in heels sometimes 18 to 20 hours a day on set [of Sex and the City],” she told Footwear News. “I never took them off, but I wasn’t in pain. I had been a ballet dancer so I don’t know, maybe I prepped my feet with pointe shoes.” ‘ I am also happy to report that the line will be available come January exclusively from Nordstrom US stores. Stateside friends get ready… I may have you going on scouting missions for me!

3 :: Punch it Up – I’ve been obsessed with refreshing drinks lately. I think it’s the season and because we’ve had some really hot days where I’ve been craving something NOT water, but not super sugary sweet either. Here are my Pinterest punch picks of the week. Click on an image to go on to the recipe! 1) White Sangria 2) Blackberry Mint Agua Fresca 3) Chai-Spiced Triple Citrus Tea 4) Lavender Lemonade

4 :: Taking every Opportunity
– Festival season has started ya’ll!!!! Remember a couple of weeks ago when I talked about seizing the opportunity to do more? Well I have hopped on that bandwagon BIG TIME lately. Jessica Aiduk and her brother Alex invited me to join them for the Rudeshimer wine festival, my first wine fest of the season! The very next day Paula and I trooped out to the Mosel river valley to a hot air balloon festival in Föhren. SO MANY BALLOONS! It took me back to my childhood. Needless to say there will be blog posts dedicated to these events, but for now, here’s a handful of candy for your eyeballs.

5 :: Grab your Summer Session – I just realized yesterday that my husband and I have not had our photos taken this summer yet! Here it is, already mid-way through August and the German sunshine will be fading into a grey German winter soon. While I can’t take our photos by myself, YOU can seize the opportunity to book your family’s session with Kirsten Ashley Photography. We’ve all heard the phrase “It’s a small world after all”. Well in this case it could not be more true. I had the honor of photographing the Schneider family a couple of weeks ago and I could not have been more tickled pink. Know why? Because Russ Schneider and my husband have been best friends since childhood. They were each others “Best Man” at their weddings and are brothers at heart. By the grace of God the Schneider’s PCS’d out here to Germany and now live not 20 minutes from us!

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Samuel James Schneider into the world and into his beautiful family. Born on April 9th he’s already grown so much! Russ & Michelle, you have a beautiful family and such handsome boys. Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to photograph such precious moments. I look forward to watching both boy grow up! I had so much fun during our session and I hope that you guys enjoy your sneak peek! I can hardly wait to show you the rest.

Russ & Michelle, thanks again for such a splendid opportunity to photograph your wonderful family! I look forward to working with you guys again soon!
